Saint Kateri Parish is blessed to have four worship sites and a school on four campuses in the town of Irondequoit, NY., a suburb of Rochester.
Who we are today is the legacy we received from our “ancestors,” St. Salome Church, St. Margaret Mary Church, St. Thomas the Apostle Church, St. Cecilia Church, and Christ the King Church. First dedicated from 1908 through 1956, these were vibrant and beloved Irondequoit neighborhood parishes.
Fast forward to 2007, these five Irondequoit churches formed a cluster; the first step in creating a new parish for us.
2017 was a challenging year when one of our cluster churches, St. Salome, was decommissioned and replaced with senior housing. Many of the vessels, garments, pews, several of the fixtures, and the tabernacle, can be found in churches and chapels throughout the Rochester area.
We must “of course” also acknowledge the Priests of the Order of Saint Basil. After 40 years of pastoral ministry, first at Christ the King Church and School, and then the entire parish (now including the four churches and a school renamed Saint Kateri School) the Order was in need of focusing their efforts on specific institutions, and in 2019, with the well wishes of the bishop, parishioners and friends, parted for their new journey. Many parishioners and friends are still in very close contact with our dear Basilian friends.
We have been blessed again: in 2019, Fr. Lance Gonyo joined the Saint Kateri Family as our new Pastor. With the support of parish council, the finance council, staff and parishioners, we are seeing building concerns, maintenance and safety being a focus and plans implemented to help move the parish forward.
Without a doubt, Fr. Gonyo’s main focus is his pastoral ministry. His personal touches and heartfelt understanding put our families, individuals and even our animals at ease, and ensures us God is truly present in all we do.
Come worship the Lord in Mass with us.
There is a special place for you and your family at Saint Kateri Parish.
